Driveway Base Rock Calculator

Calculate compacted volume, order volume (+12% compaction allowance), and tonnage for a driveway base rock section.

Recommended minimum: 8" of base rock (3" or larger) compacted in lifts, capped with 4" of 1½" minus or ¾" minus. All driveway rock should be minus rock — the fines bind the material together. Compact each lift separately before adding the next.

Base depth depends on subgrade conditions and expected loads. A driveway carrying concrete trucks or heavy equipment needs more base than a passenger-car driveway — consult your contractor.

Assumptions

  • 12% volume allowance for compaction — loose material ordered will compact down to the target depth.
  • Tonnage is ceiling-rounded to the nearest whole ton.
  • Rectangular footprint; for curved driveways, break into straight segments.
